Copper’s Nose Knows: Piccadilly Patrol Sniffs Out Immigration Offender |
||
|
Officers from the Piccadilly Gardens Neighbourhood Policing Team were out on patrol yesterday, maintaining a visible presence in one of Manchester’s busiest city-centre spaces. While it proved to be a relatively calm day in the gardens, officers remained proactive in their work to keep the area safe for residents, workers and visitors.
Throughout the shift, neighbourhood officers carried out a number of stop searches in line with policing powers, engaging with individuals in the area and disrupting potential criminal activity. The aim of these proactive checks is not only to identify offences but also to reassure the public that officers are actively monitoring the area.
During the patrol, PC Marothi and Sgt Wyatt followed their instincts after becoming suspicious of a male in the gardens. After speaking with him and making further enquiries, officers discovered he was a foreign national who had been living in the UK for approximately 11 years without ever coming to the attention of immigration authorities. He was subsequently arrested so that his status could be investigated further.
The team also took time during the day to meet with staff at a well-known shop in the area to discuss crime prevention measures and ongoing concerns affecting local businesses. Conversations focused on improving communication between businesses and police, as well as practical steps to deter theft and antisocial behaviour.
Speaking after the patrol, Sgt Wyatt offered a reflection on the day’s work:
“Some days the gardens are hectic, some days they’re quiet — but quiet doesn’t mean we switch off. If something doesn’t feel right, you have a look. Yesterday was one of those moments where the old copper’s nose paid off.”
The Piccadilly Gardens Neighbourhood Policing Team continues regular patrols in the area as part of their ongoing efforts to tackle crime and support the local community.
