Over recent weeks, officers in from Derby West LPU and the Normanton SNT have disrupted numerous cannabis cultivations operating within residential properties in the area. These results form part of our ongoing work to protect our communities and tackle wider organised criminal networks.

While cannabis grows may appear small or harmless, they directly fund larger organised crime groups, contributing to violence, exploitation, trafficking, and other serious offending. Each grow we dismantle removes profit from these groups and helps keep our community safer.

Cannabis factories pose serious risks not just to the occupants, but also to neighbours and the wider community, including:

Bypassed or dangerously altered electrics – a major fire hazard

High heat output and constant use of powerful lighting and fans

Increased risk of house fires and electric shocks

Chemical exposure from fertilisers and pesticides

Structural damage caused by moisture and makeshift equipment

These setups are often operated by vulnerable people who may be exploited, controlled, or trafficked by organised crime groups.

👀 Telltale Signs of a Cannabis Grow

You may notice some of the following indicators:

Strong, distinctive cannabis smell

Blacked‑out or permanently closed blinds

Bypassed electrics or heavy cables running to/from the property

Plug‑and‑play CCTV/surveillance cameras around doors or windows

No one visibly coming or going at the address

Bins not being put out for collection

Loud extractor fans heard through walls (especially in terraced or semi‑detached homes)

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth reporting.
