In recent weeks there has been an increase in wheelie bin fires in the Storer Road and small fires in the trees to Cumberland Park. These have been attended and extinguished by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

We’re reminding residents to take simple steps to prevent wheelie bin fires. These incidents can spread quickly, cause serious damage, and put lives at risk.

🛑 How to Protect Your Home

✔ Keep bins out of sight where possible
Store wheelie bins in a secure location, such as behind locked gates or away from the roadside.

✔ Only put bins out on collection day
Minimising the time they’re left unattended reduces the risk of deliberate fires.

✔ Don’t overfill bins
Lids should close fully. Overflowing waste can catch fire more easily.

✔ Never put hot ashes or BBQ coals in your bin
These can smoulder for hours and ignite rubbish.

✔ Keep bins away from buildings and vehicles
If a fire starts, distance helps prevent flames from spreading.

✔ Do not dispose of vapes or batteries in your household waste
