Keeping Dowry Gold in the bank or a Home Safe |

Afternoon Resident
West Midlands Police advises that while many families traditionally keep high-value family gold or dowry at home, a safety deposit vault is the safest option for large amounts of jewellery. Storing valuables in a bank or specialist vault removes the risk of your home being targeted and may lower your insurance premiums.
If you choose to keep dowry at home, WMP provides the following security recommendations: Home Storage Best Practices Use a Rated Safe: Ensure your safe is fire-rated and insurance-rated for the specific value of the gold inside. Secure Installation: The safe must be bolted to a solid wall or the floor to prevent it from being carried away. Discreet Placement: Avoid keeping safes in bedrooms, as these are the first place burglars look. Certified Products: Look for security products with the "Police Preferred Specification"
Layered Security & Prevention External Security: Install a monitored burglar alarm through accredited bodies like the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) or SSAIB. Visual Deterrents: Use CCTV, doorbell cameras, and security lighting to discourage offenders. Discrete Transport: When attending weddings or festivals, keep jewellery concealed until you arrive at the venue rather than wearing it in public.
Documentation & Recovery Inventory: Take clear photographs of each piece and keep a written description, including valuations and receipts. Marking: Use forensic marking fluids like Smart Water or UV pens to make the gold less attractive to thieves and easier to return if recovered. Property Registration: Register your valuables for free on the Immobilise National Property Register. | ||
