Dear Stamford Hill residents, Please stay safe on your bike! CYCLE SAFETY On the road
• Pay attention to what's going on around you and what other road users might do. • Make eye contact with drivers so you are sure they have seen you. •Use appropriate hand signals when making a left or right turn. • Stay safe by staying back behind lorries and other large vehicles as they may not be able to see you clearly. • Watch out for traffic turning ahead of you at junctions and never pass left-turning vehicles on the nearside. •Only overtake if there is enough room and it is safe to do so. • Always stop at red lights. •Ride in a straight line past parked cars rather than dodge between them. Allow at least a full door's width between you and the vehicle in case a door opens suddenly. • Always ride away from the gutter. If the road is too narrow for vehicles to pass you safely, it may be safer to ride towards the middle of the lane to prevent dangerous overtaking by other vehicles. Choose your route • Consider using designated cycle lanes when possible. • Consider planning a route along quieter roads where you are less likely to encounter lorries. What not to do • Don't use a mobile phone or earphones whilst cycling. • Don't ride through red traffic lights, it's dangerous and you may be fined £50. • Don't cycle on the pavement or the wrong way up one-way streets (unless clearly marked for cyclists). • Don't cycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
