Preventing Car and Vehicle Theft |

|
Dear residents,
Vehicle Theft and Theft from a motor vehicle remains a focus in Hammersmith. From 02/03/2026 until 02/04/2026, we have had 9 thefts from a motor vehicle reported to police and an additional 3 thefts of a motor vehicle reported. Members of the public are urged to continue to report theft from a motor vehicle - even if no items are stolen.
Always lock your vehicle - always lock your vehicle, even if you're popping in the shop or filling up the tank. Thief's often look for quick opportunities to steal from cars, even in broad daylight. Always check for open windows or open sun roofs. Thief's may use these entry routes to gain access to your vehicle. Criminal gangs often look for cars with automatic folding in wing mirrors to identify if a car has been locked or not. Keep the Keys Safe - Sometimes thief's will use sticks with hooks to steal car keys placed close to your front door. Placing them in a draw or safe space will dramatically lower the chances of thief's stealing your car. It is not uncommon for burglars to steal car/motorbike keys from inside your home. Keyless entry - Modern cars with keyless entry, automatically unlock when the key is in close proximity of the registered car even if the key is inside your pocket or bag. keyless car theft is often done by using tools to fool the car into thinking the key is close by, therefore unlocking the car and starting the ignition. Ways to prevent this can be by using a Faraday Bag. This is a pouch which blocks signals from going inside and out making it much harder for a car thief to steal your car. You can purchase these online at a low cost. Another way victims are having keyless cars stolen is from fake buyers. When selling a car, make sure you keep the keys in sight at all times, or even keep hold of the keys yourself. This is to prevent the thief from cloning the key to later return and steal the car.
