Protecting Our Young People from Criminal Exploitation |
||
|
Good afternoon,
I hope everyone is well - The purpose of this message today is to raise awareness of county lines and the exploitation of young people and to support the community to recognise the signs, knowing how to seek support, understanding the risk and working together to protect young people to prevent exploitation.
What is county lines ? This is a form of criminal exploitation where organised criminal groups recruit and control young people to transport drugs, money or weapons in and out London. Young people are usually groomed through manipulation of friendship, false promises of money or protection before being subject to threats and violence.
Why are young people targeted ? Criminal groups usually target young people who are vulnerable due to peer pressure, personal circumstances as well as manipulating those who have a lack of understanding of the risks and dangers that comes with being a drug courier through glamourising a lifestyle of crime. Exploitation can affect young people from all backgrounds and begins subtly, making it difficult for families or the community to recognise this at an early stage.
Understanding Exploitation: VICTIMS OF CRIME, Not offenders: It is vital to understand that young people who are involved with county lines are often victims of exploitation rather than willing to participate. Many feel trapped through debt, fear or threats made towards themselves or families. Fear of repercussions can prevent them from asking for support/ help.
Indicators Of Exploitations This does not confirm exploitation on its own, however, it highlights the need of support.
The impact on young people, families and community: County Lines exploitations extends beyond the individual as young people may face emotional trauma, physical harm and long term impact on their well being and education. Families feel confusion and fear, while communities may experience increased concern and mistrust.
The Role Of the Police and Partnership Working: The police focused on prevention, safeguarding and partnership working which includes working alongside schools, local authorities and community groups to disrupt those responsible for exploitation. Early engagement allows support to be provided before escalation.
Reporting concerns and the Role of Crime Stoppers: If there are concerns around exploitation, information can be shared in several ways, speaking directly with local officers or community engagement teams, as well as crime soppers also provide a confidential and anonymous reporting option for anyone who wishes to share information without giving their details.
No piece of information is to small - sharing concerns can help protect young people from harm.
How the community can help ? Communities play a big role in safeguarding young people. This includes maintain open communication, supporting one another, challenging harmful influences and seeking early advice. By working together risks can be identified early and support will be provided effectively.
County Lines is a growing issue whereby early awareness and strong partnership can make a difference. Through continued engagement, community collaboration and information sharing, we can protect young people and families. We aim to protect our community and build trust.
MET Engage is about listening, building trust, and working together to protect our young people and strengthen our communities.
