Countryside Code |
Good Afternoon, Are you a dog owner or somebody that enjoys utilising one of our area's many public rights of way? If so, this is just a polite reminder when crossing farmland to follow the countryside code. We have dealt with numerous incidents of late relating to livestock escaping as people have neglected to secure gates properly as well as dogs worrying and even killing livestock. Please ensure if you open a gate, that you close it securely behind you and always keep your dog on a lead around livestock.
Stronger penalties for livestock worrying came into force on the 18th March 2026 across England & Wales. The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025 includes: Unlimited fines for dog attacks on livestock Police having new powers to detain dogs & collect evidence Protection extended to roads & paths Definition of livestock now includes camelids like alpacas & llamas These changes aim to reduce the emotional & financial strain on farmers and protect rural communities. Always follow the Countryside Code: • Any dog is capable of livestock worrying - keep dogs on a lead around farm animals • Be confident your dog will return on command - if in doubt keep on a lead • Release your dog if you or they are threatened by livestock or horse to make it easier for you both to get to safety • As a last resort a farmer can shoot a dog that is attacking or chasing livestock
Many Thanks PC 1486 Wright West Rural Task Force
