Your local police team would like to remind residents about the responsible use of home CCTV and doorbell cameras.
If your camera only covers your own property, such as inside your home or your private garden, there are no specific legal issues. However, if your camera records areas beyond your boundary, including pavements, roads, or neighbouring homes, the law applies.
This means you must have a good reason for recording, keep footage secure, and not keep it for longer than necessary. You should avoid recording more than is needed and clearly show that CCTV is in use. Recording audio is not advised, as it can be intrusive and unlawful. CCTV footage should not be shared on social media or with others. It can be shared with the police if it helps prevent or investigate crime.
Used correctly, CCTV helps keep communities safe. Used incorrectly, it can cause distress and lead to complaints or action being taken.
Further guidance is available from the Information Commissioner’s Office. Thank you for helping keep our neighbourhood safe and respectful.
