I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Sexual Offences, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. A man has been jailed for raping a teenage girl in Basingstoke.
Tedros Goytom, 28, of Old Street, Hackney, raped the girl, who was 16 at the time, near a bench close to Winterthur Way.
Winchester Crown Court heard the pair knew each other through social media and that Goytom attacked her when they were walking together on Friday 2 September 2022.
Officers launched an investigation and arrested Goytom, an Eritrea national who was living at an address on Popley Way at the time, as part of their enquiries.
He was charged with rape and was convicted following a trial at Winchester Crown Court. Goytom was jailed for a total of five years at the same court on Wednesday 22 April.
Speaking after the hearing, DC Victoria Cobley, who oversaw the investigation as part of the specialist Amberstone team, said: “Tedros Goytom’s behaviour was predatory and horrific, and his despicable crime has had a huge impact on the victim and her family.
“The courage of the girl and her family throughout our investigation meant that we were able to present a case to the court and ultimately led to his conviction.
“While nothing can undo what the girl and her family have been through, I hope that knowing Goytom will now spend time behind bars for what he did will provide reassurance to them that we will do all we can to bring perpetrators to justice.
“We take all allegations of rape and sexual assault extremely seriously and have specially trained teams that can investigate these kinds of offences and provide support to victims.
“Our officers will not tolerate violence against women and girls in our communities, and it is our promise to anyone who comes forward to report that you will be believed and have the allegations taken extremely seriously.
“We have also been really clear that we police without fear or favour, and regardless of ethnicity or nationality, if you commit a crime then we will use all powers available to us to ensure you face justice.”
We want to encourage anyone who has been affected by any crime of a sexual nature to contact police on 101, where you can speak to an officer in confidence.
