Dear Resident,

SCAM WARNING

Your Safer Neighbourhood Team, Wimbledon Park, is asking residents to stay vigilant.

We have received reports in the local area of individuals posing as contractors to pressure residents into paying for unnecessary, unrequested or shoddy home repairs. An example of a recent scam occurring in ‘The Grid’ is regarding individuals stating they will clean and treat brickwork but however stating that the final price will not be known until the job is completed as the cleaning amount is based on square foot, so no prior agreement of an agreed figure is stated before work is carried out.

Please keep in mind the following advice and share this information: -

Please do not hand over any money to anyone who turns up unannounced offering – or carrying out – work you have not agreed to or arranged for a visit.

Stay inside your property an avoid engaging with these individuals if they turn up at your property unannounced.

If you feel pressured, threatened or intimidated into paying for services you did not request then call 999 immediately.

If the situation is not urgent you can contact us on 101 or make a report online via the Metropolitan Police website

Please make sure you only use approved companies to carry out any work at your property.

Do not allow anyone into your home – unless you are certain of their identity and purpose

Aways request and thoroughly check identification – including verifying the company they claim to represent

No legitimate contractor will request payment at your doorstep before work has been carried out

Before agreeing to any work ensure you have confirmed the details with your housing management or authorised representive if applicable

Report any suspicious behaviour immediately through: -

999 – for emergencies of if you feel threatened

101 – for non-emergencies

Met Engage – to speak to your local officers but not report a crime

Please stay alert and support one another and look out of any neighbours who you think may fall for a scam of builders attending the location and trying to scam money out of individuals locally for work.
