I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. With the arrival of spring and improved weather conditions, there has been a noticeable increase in home improvement and renovation activity. In line with this seasonal trend, the Metropolitan Police Service has identified a rise in burglary offences targeting properties undergoing building or renovation works, as well as thefts involving vehicles used by tradespersons attending these sites. If you, or someone you know, are currently undertaking—or planning to undertake—home improvements, it is important to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of crime and protect both your property and those working at the premises. Crime Prevention Advice:
Ensure all tools, materials, and equipment are securely stored when not in use, ideally within locked buildings or secure containers. Remove or secure ladders and scaffolding when works are not actively taking place, as these can be used to gain access to upper floors. Keep doors and windows closed and locked whenever the property is unattended, including during short absences. Install or utilise existing security measures such as intruder alarms, CCTV systems, or motion-activated lighting. Encourage tradespeople to lock their vehicles and avoid leaving tools or valuables on display inside. Clearly mark valuable equipment with identifiable information or use property marking systems. Be mindful of who has access to the property—only use reputable, vetted contractors where possible. Maintain good communication with neighbours and ask them to report any suspicious activity.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
