I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Farming equipment thefts, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. For the attention of the farming community.
We have been made aware of a number of GPS thefts across the north part of the Humberside Police area. (Sancton, Etton and Yapham MILL)
We know from previous incidents that the people who commit these offences will travel far and wide to steal these items.
Please can we remind farmers to review their security and to keep their properties/equipment safe. In relation to the security of tractor GPS Receiver and Screens, please consider the below crime prevention advice around MARK IT, REMOVE IT and LOCK IT.
Tractor GPS Screens • Remove screens when not in use – ensure they are left in a safe and secure location. • Mark screens using Forensic Marking and use the provided stickers to advertise forensic marking is in use • Record serial numbers
Tractor GPS Receivers • If not in use, disconnect, remove and secure in a safe location • Remove from roof if not in use and tractor is being used on road – this will prevent advertising the fact you have a receiver. • Ensure the software is up to date, and marked with security warning stickers • Consider securing the tractor in a locked alarmed shed • Record serial numbers
Please also make sure your device is properly insured as it may need to be a separate item on your insurance, especially once removed from machinery.
We would also advise people to consider installing CCTV, intruder alarms, security lighting and boundary security (entrance gates/fencing) around your property to provide formal surveillance and target harden the most vulnerable areas.
We cannot physically be everywhere at the same time and our communities are our eyes and ears in the countryside. They know when something they see isn’t right.
We want them to call us about any suspicious activity they see. Please report this to police immediately on 999 if there is a crime in progress or 101 for non-emergency incidents. Alternatively if you have any information about these crimes please contact Crimestoppers on 0800555111. If you think your incident is related to GPS thefts please quote "OP WALRUS"

Rural crime has no set definition but can be very broadly classified as any crime and anti-social behaviour occurring in rural areas. It is often linked to Organised Crime Groups (OCGs) who target and exploit rural communities across a range of crime types, for example organised plant theft, livestock theft, burglaries targeting firearms, poaching and hare coursing. The NPCC (National Police Chiefs Council) has developed a Rural Affairs Strategy which sets out police priorities in this area: - Farm machinery, plant and vehicle theft - including quad bikes, modern and vintage tractors, tools and equipment from outbuildings.
- Livestock offences - including theft, worrying and attacks.
- Fuel theft - including heating oil, diesel and petrol.
- Equine crime - including horse trailer and horse box theft, horse theft, tack theft, fly grazing and neglect.
- Fly tipping - including household and commercial waste, waste through organised criminality.
- Poaching which crosses over with the wildlife priorities - including hare coursing, deer poaching, fish poaching.
- Heritage crime - It is also important to recognise that rural crime and antisocial behaviour have an adverse impact on the historic environment and heritage assets found across the United Kingdom - including the theft of metal from church buildings, unlawful metal detecting and interference with historic shipwrecks.
