I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. I am writing to inform you of a recent reported distraction burglary that occurred over the weekend within the ward.
An unknown suspect gained entry to the home of an elderly resident by claiming there was an issue with a roof tile. Whilst inside the property, the suspect has subsequently stolen a bank card, which was then used to withdraw funds and make purchases.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind all residents to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves from this type of offence.
Please be advised of the following safety guidance: Be cautious of unexpected callers at your door, particularly those offering to carry out repairs or claiming there is an urgent issue with your property. Do not allow unknown individuals into your home. If necessary, ask them to leave. Legitimate callers, including those from companies or the local authority, should be able to provide official identification. Do not hesitate to request this. If you do permit someone into your property, ensure that valuables are kept out of sight and are not easily accessible. Never feel pressured into allowing entry or agreeing to work on the spot.
Distraction burglaries are not isolated to Chessington and occur across London and the wider country, often targeting vulnerable individuals and exploiting trust.
We would encourage you to share this information with friends, family, and neighbours—particularly those who may be more vulnerable—to help raise awareness.
Officers from the Chessington Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) will be conducting patrols and engaging with residents in the area in response to this incident.
Thank you for your continued support.
If you have any information regarding this incident or any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
