Subject: Clarification on UK Law – E-Scooters and Bicycles I would like to clarify the current legal position in the UK regarding the use of e‑scooters and bicycles. E‑scooters: Privately owned e‑scooters are currently illegal to use on public roads, pavements, and cycle lanes in the UK. They can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. The only exception is within designated government-approved rental trial areas, where users must comply with specific rules, including holding at least a provisional driving licence, using the scooter within the permitted area, and adhering to road traffic laws.
Bicycles: Bicycles are legal for use on public roads and cycle paths. Cyclists must follow the Highway Code, including traffic signals and road signs. Riding on pavements is generally not permitted unless signage indicates otherwise. While helmets are strongly recommended, they are not legally required. Bicycles must also be roadworthy and, when used at night, must have appropriate lights and reflectors fitted.
Failure to comply with these laws may result in fines, penalty points, or other enforcement action.
