We have had several reports regarding Drones being flown over residential areas and schools, please see below for more information and guidance regarding the rules around drones. Drones. Your responsibility If you fly or own a drone, it’s your responsibility to make sure all flights are safe and legal. A drone is a remote-controlled aircraft that doesn’t have a pilot on-board. Drones range from small children’s toys to large military systems. This includes remote-controlled model planes and helicopters. There are different rules for different types (categories) of drone flight. The categories depend mainly on the weight of the drone, where you intend to fly, and how close you will be to people and built-up areas (towns and cities). The Drone and Model Aircraft Code The Drone and Model Aircraft Code is like the Highway Code for drones. It was created by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and it tells you how to fly a drone legally and safely. As of 2026, UK drone rules prohibit flying closer than 50m to uninvolved people or buildings, and 150m from crowded areas like schools, unless using a <250g drone. You cannot fly directly over crowded areas. All drones >100g require a CAA flyer ID. Always respect privacy; improper use may be reported to the police. Key Rules for Houses & Residential Areas Key Rules for Schools & Crowds Important 2026 Updates For the full, legally binding regulations, refer to the official CAA Drone Code.
