I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road safety issues (Speeding), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. π¦ Community Speedwatch β Making Roads Safer Kent Police runs Community Speedwatch, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reducing speeding and improving safety. What is Speedwatch? π₯ Local volunteers, trained by Kent Police, monitor speeds at approved sites (20, 30, or 40 mph zones) using certified equipment. π Details of speeding vehicles are securely logged for 12 months. Repeat or excessive offenders may receive advisory lettersβand in some cases, personal visits from officers. Important: Speedwatch is educational, not enforcement. No fines or penalty points are issued directly, but the data helps target police action and inform road safety improvements. β
Does it work? Yes! Over 90% of drivers recorded speeding once are not seen again within 12 months, and overall speeding reduces in communities over time. π Want to help? If you can spare an hour a week, join us! π www.kent.police.uk/speedwatch Given the concerns raised by the local community in the last survey generally across Thanet, today, myself and other officers have been out conducting speed checks. These are separate to Speedwatch and are an enforcement action.
I am pleased to say that no one was found to be driving unsafely and only a very small number of vehicles required being stopped and drivers reminded of speed limits. Locations were selected based on reports from local residents as to where anti social driving was taking place.
As per my previous update, areas where Anti Social driving have been identified and I will continue to attend these as I have been at times most linked to those activities. I will continue to conduct stops and deter anymore of this kind of behaviour. There is not currently a Speedwatch in the area but the details of what that is can be found above.
