North York Moors Safety Reminder – Whitby Area

On Sunday, Whitby Neighbourhood Policing Team assisted Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) once again, this time in the safe recovery of 7 tank shells. On this occasion, the items were confirmed by specialist personnel to be solid shot (non-explosive). However, finds like this must always be treated as potentially dangerous until assessed by specialists.

While it’s great to enjoy the countryside, it’s vital hikers, runners and outdoor adventurers stick to marked paths, particularly in the Fylingdales and Langdale Moor areas: these areas can contain unexploded ordnance from historic military activity.

Following last year’s wildfire response efforts, some areas of land and established footpaths may remain disturbed or appear altered, making it easier to unintentionally stray off route. Nonetheless, the public are encouraged to take care to remain on clearly marked paths and make use of navigation tools when outdoors.

EOD would just like to remind us all to:

•                                                  Stick to clearly marked and maintained paths

•                                                  Avoiding unmarked areas

•                                                  Never touch or approach unfamiliar objects

•                                                  Reporting anything suspicious to Police
