Road Safety - E-Scooters |
||
|
Police are reminding residents in Wardleworth, Milkstone & Deeplish, about the law and safety concerns around e‑scooters. Privately owned e‑scooters are not legal to use on public roads, pavements or cycle lanes. Rochdale is not part of any government trial scheme, so most e‑scooters being used in public locally are being used unlawfully.
Yesterday alone we seized at least 5 e-scooters in Rochdale.
In law, e‑scooters are classed as powered transporters, meaning they would require insurance and a driving licence. As this cannot currently be met, they can only be used on private land with permission. Anyone caught using them illegally may be issued a fine, receive points on their licence, and have the scooter seized.
There are also clear safety risks. Riding on pavements puts pedestrians, especially children and elderly residents, in danger. Many riders do not wear protective gear and may lack control, increasing the risk of serious injury.
We ask residents not to use privately owned e‑scooters in public and to think about the safety of others. Police will continue to take action where needed.
Dangerous or anti social use can be reported via 101, or 999 in an emergency.
Lets continue making our area safe.
