Shoplifting continues to be a growing concern across our area, affecting both major retailers and small local businesses. These offences don’t just harm shop owners — they push up prices for the honest members of our community who pay for their items. Kent Police remain committed to tackling this behaviour and protecting our high streets.

Today, while carrying out our usual patrols, officers located a male who was already wanted for several shoplifting offences in the Westbrook and Garlinge areas. He was arrested and further checks confirmed he had also failed to attend court and had additional warrants outstanding.

This type of offending has a real impact on local shops, staff, and residents. We will continue to identify and pursue those who cause harm and disruption in our community.

How you can help keep our shops and community safe

Report suspicious behaviour early – if something doesn’t feel right, let staff or police know. Quick reporting often prevents offences.

Look out for local businesses – many are small, family‑run shops that rely on community support.

Stay aware of your surroundings when visiting busy retail areas, especially during peak times.

If you witness a crime in progress, do not intervene directly. Instead, call 999 in an emergency or 101 for non‑urgent reports. You can also report online on the Kent Police website.

Businesses can consider simple measures such as keeping high‑value items in view, maintaining clear sightlines, and ensuring CCTV is working and well‑positioned.
