Romance fraud: Know the Signs, Protect Yourself |
||
|
Dear Resident,
In 2025, 10,784 people reported being victims of romance fraud, with losses totalling more than £102 million. Fraudsters often build trust online before manipulating victims into sending money or sharing personal information. The emotional and financial impact can be devastating.
How it happens? Romance fraudsters are experts at manipulating their victims.
They will usually: Create a story that sounds believable and start the relationship in a normal way Gain your trust over time Invent a problem or situation where you may feel like you want to send money or gifts to help them Isolate you from friends or family
Cybercrime and fraud remain some of the UK's most underreported crimes. Every report helps law enforcement build a clearer picture, disrupt offenders, and better protect our communities.
If you think you've been a victim, or have concerns about suspicious online behaviour, please report it to Police or Action Fraud
Learn how to spot the warning signs of romance fraud: • Someone professes strong feelings very quickly • They avoid meeting in person or video calling • They ask for money, gifts, or financial help • They create excuses for why they can't meet
Stay vigilant, protect your personal information, and talk to someone you trust if something doesn't feel right.
