Our parks, waterways, streets and gardens are shared spaces — not just for people, but for pets, wildlife and birds. Today we want to highlight how we can prevent animal‑related crime, promote responsible pet ownership, and ensure concerns are reported to the right agency so action can be taken quickly and effectively.

🐶 Responsible dog & pet ownership – what is acceptable

Responsible ownership keeps everyone safe — including your pet.

✅ Keeping dogs under control in public spaces
✅ Using a lead where required, especially near roads, wildlife and children
✅ Cleaning up after your dog
✅ Ensuring pets receive appropriate care, food, shelter and veterinary treatment
✅ Being considerate of others using shared spaces

🚫 What is not acceptable

The following are not minor issues — they can be criminal offences:

Allowing dogs to be dangerously out of control

Failing to clean up dog fouling

Neglect or mistreatment of animals

Using weapons (including catapults) to harm birds or wildlife

Poaching, trapping or cruelty towards animals

Abandoning pets

If you see this behaviour, please report it — early action prevents serious harm.

🦊 Wildlife & bird protection

Wildlife and birds are legally protected. Harm, disturbance or cruelty — whether deliberate or reckless — can result in enforcement action.

If you see:

Injured or distressed wildlife

Harm to birds or nests

Illegal trapping, poaching or cruelty

Ongoing environmental issues affecting animals
