How to reduce the risk of vehicle crime
Lock the doors and close all windows, even for short stops.
Don’t leave valuables visible (bags, phones, coats, chargers).
Take keys and key fobs with you; don’t leave spares in the car.
Park in well-lit, busy areas or secure parking if possible.
Extra protection
Use a steering wheel lock or pedal lock.
If you have one, activate the alarm or immobiliser.
Keep software and keys secure (keyless cars can be targeted by signal theft—store keys away from doors at home).
At home
Lock garages and gates.
Keep car keys out of sight.
Consider motion lights or cameras.
If your car is broken into
Don’t touch anything inside the vehicle (fingerprints).
Take photos of damage.
Report it to the police as soon as possible.
Contact your insurance company.
Cancel or secure anything stolen (cards, devices).
If your vehicle is stolen
Report it to the police immediately.
Tell your insurance provider.
If your phone was in the car, use “Find My” / tracking features if available.
Personal safety matters most
If you see someone breaking into a vehicle, do not confront them.
