Police thank communities for a safe summer solstice

Police officers were in attendance at Stonehenge and Avebury overnight to welcome in the longest day of the year.

Approximately 20,000 people gathered to mark the event at Stonehenge, with a further 7,000 attending at Avebury. The majority of those present marked the occasion safely and responsibly.

Two people were arrested at Stonehenge on suspicion of assault, and multiple drones were seized due to a temporary restricted airspace put in place for the large-scale event.

Chief Superintendent Guy Elkins said: "This year’s summer solstice was a safe and successful occasion, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended, including our communities and the visitors to the site, who have enjoyed the event in the spirit in which it is held.

"I’d also like to thank local communities for welcoming people into the area. We appreciate your patience while thousands of visitors travel here for this special occasion. I’m pleased to say there were not the same road issues we saw last year, with minimal disruption reported across the network.

"We would also like to thank our partners and stakeholders, and of course the National Trust and English Heritage, for working with us. Collectively, we have ensured that everyone could enjoy the event peacefully.

"Finally, thank you to our officers, staff and volunteers who worked through the night at such an incredible event."
