Protect your home during the warm weather

Dear Resident,

There is a lot of talk in the news about the high temperatures across the country this week and into the weekend.

I have no doubt that you will be taking this opportunity to open your windows and doors to let some fresh air into your home to try and cool things down.

Due to this, I would like to explain that 1 in 3 burglaries within Humberside are committed where the burglar has gained entry through an open window or an unlocked door. Most burglaries are committed by opportunists, and they will look for easy points of entry.

So, by closing windows that someone could climb through when you aren't in a room, and by locking your doors, you will make your home less of an easy target to an opportunist burglar.

If you are looking for options to keep your house cool, there is advice on the internet on various sites.

This advice does include -

Closing your windows and curtains during the day, as the outside air and sun will warm your home up inside.

Open upstairs windows during the evening when the sun has gone down, hot air rises and this will cool your home more effectively.

Closing doors during the day to restrict the movement of hot air around the property.

Using fans to move air around in a room, a bowl of ice in front of the fan will assist in cooling the air.

If you struggle to keep the whole of the property cool, consider just cooling the rooms you spend the most time in, this will be more cost effective.

These are just a few options you could consider.

Try and keep cool but do remember to close your windows and lock your doors.
