With the warmer, humid weather, we’re seeing more people heading to rivers, canals and reservoirs to cool down; but please remember, open water can be extremely dangerous.
Even on hot days, the water stays cold and can cause cold water shock, leading to panic and breathing difficulties. There may also be strong currents, hidden hazards, and sudden drops that aren’t visible from the surface. What looks calm can quickly turn risky.
We’d especially ask parents and carers to have a quick chat with young people about these dangers, as we know groups often gather near water during the holidays.
If someone gets into trouble, don’t go in after them call 999 straight away and ask for the Fire Service.
Use something from the bank (near the open water) to help if you can, like a life ring or anything that floats. Let’s keep each other safe this summer.
