Wildfire Risks

You don't need us to tell you that it's scorchio out there right now, but as the temperature rises, so too do the risks of fires in our open spaces.

While days of concentrated heat can trigger wildfires, human-error can also result in out-of-control fires, with disposable barbecues and discarded cigarette butts also leading causes.

In recent months, Rick has made a point of collecting discarded glass bottles during patrols of the Eastbrookend Country Park, Fels Field and neighbouring Central Park. By magnifying the sun's rays, glass can also ignite dry grass.

Last year, over 20 glass bottles were recovered from the ward's open spaces over a 10-week period.
