Good Afternoon, The Bush Hill Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team has recently become aware of several incidents where individuals selling their vehicles privately have been targeted by dishonest buyers. To help prevent residents from becoming victims of vehicle sale fraud, we would like to remind the community of the precautions that should be taken when arranging a private vehicle sale. When selling your vehicle, please consider the following crime prevention measures: Ensure that your property is covered by CCTV, such as a Ring doorbell or other security camera, particularly in the area where the vehicle is parked and any viewings will take place.Never leave the vehicle logbook (V5C) inside the vehicle. Fraudsters may attempt to steal the document and transfer ownership details into their own name without payment being made.Request and verify photographic identification from the prospective buyer before allowing them to inspect the vehicle and again upon completion of the sale.Avoid meeting prospective buyers alone. Where possible, ensure that a trusted friend, family member, or neighbour is present throughout the viewing and transaction.Keep a record of the buyer’s details, including their name, identification, and the date and time of the meeting. Where available, ensure CCTV is recording the interaction.Make every effort to secure the vehicle before and during the sale process by using security devices such as steering wheel locks, wheel clamps, or security bollards. If a prospective buyer views the vehicle but decides not to proceed with the purchase, inspect the vehicle afterwards to ensure that nothing has been stolen, tampered with, or damaged.Taking these simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fraud, theft, and other criminal activity associated with private vehicle sales. We encourage all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the police. Should you require further crime prevention advice, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team. Kind regards, Bush Hill Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team Metropolitan Police Service |
