Thanet Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) Now in Force

From today (1 July), a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is in place across Thanet to address anti-social behaviour and help keep public spaces safe for residents, businesses and visitors.

Key restrictions include:

Alcohol

A year-round ban on drinking alcohol in Margate High Street and Ramsgate High Street

In other designated areas (including parts of Margate, Cliftonville, Ramsgate and Broadstairs), drinking alcohol is prohibited where behaviour is causing, or likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress

Individuals must surrender alcohol if required by an authorised officer

Anti-social behaviour

Engaging in behaviour, including as part of a group, that causes harassment, alarm or distress is prohibited

Officers can require individuals or groups to stop and/or leave an area

Misuse of public space

Using public spaces or facilities in a way that causes nuisance or disruption is not permitted

Public urination and defecation

It is an offence to urinate or defecate in public places other than in designated toilet facilities

Kent Police takes anti-social behaviour seriously and will be working closely with Thanet District Council to ensure these powers are used effectively, proportionately, and where necessary to protect the community.

This order is designed to reduce anti-social behaviour, particularly alcohol-related disorder, and improve safety across Thanet.
