Victoria Avenue area of Brandon, catapults used to shoot wild birds.

We have taken a report of three youths in the Victoria Avenue area of Brandon using catapults to shoot at wild birds. All wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and any intentional killing or injury of a wild bird constitutes an offence. 

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to an animal. 

A catapult may also constitute an offensive weapon if used in public in the relevant circumstances.

Operation Lakeshot is a Police initiative addressing the use of catapults against wildlife, targeting wildlife with catapults has become an increasing concern nationally, involving waterfowl and other wild birds and even domestic pets.
