Knutsford Police are warning residents regarding the extreme dangers of swimming in open water during the ongoing hot weather.
⚠️ Hidden Water Hazards Even if the surface appears calm and inviting, emergency services highlight that invisible dangers sit just a few feet below: Cold Water Shock: Sudden exposure to deep water causes steep drops in temperature. This triggers a natural panic response that can instantly affect breathing, dramatically reduce physical strength, and paralyze muscle control—even in strong, capable swimmers. Undercurrents & Drop-offs: Unpredictable, strong undercurrents and sudden changes in depth can drag swimmers under. Debris & Disease: Submerged structural objects, sharp debris, and hidden aquatic illnesses present serious health and entrapment risks.
🚨 Emergency Response: "Shout, Reach, Throw, Don't Go" If you witness someone struggling in the water, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service instructs you to follow these immediate rescue steps: Call 999 Immediately: Ask for the Fire and Rescue Service and provide a clear location (using tools like the what3words app can help). Shout: Verbally encourage the person to float flat on their back and try to relax their breathing until the shock passes. Reach: Extend a long object like a branch, stick, or pole from the bank. Throw: Toss them something that floats, such as a life ring or a plastic bottle. Don't Go: Never enter the water yourself to attempt a rescue, as you risk becoming a casualty yourself.
Stay safe during this warm weather and avoid open water.
