Reports of children on school roof

Dear Resident,

On Saturday 18th August at approximately 7:30pm, officers from the Ashton Hurst Neighbourhood Team responded to a Grade 1 emergency call at Dixons Academy, Broadoak Road, following reports of children on the school roof.

Officers attended the scene alongside at least three fire engines, as the Fire and Rescue Service were required to assess the situation and be prepared to safely bring anyone down from height if necessary.

Upon arrival, a number of children were found within the school grounds. They stated that they had not been on the roof and that those who had allegedly been on the roof had already left the area. CCTV footage will be reviewed as part of our enquiries.

We would like to ask parents and guardians: Do you know where your children are and what they are doing?

Please speak to your children about the very real dangers of climbing onto the roof of any building. Falls from height can result in life-changing injuries or even death. What may seem like harmless fun can have devastating consequences for those involved, their families, and the emergency services required to respond.

We would also ask that young people understand the seriousness of the emergency response that was required. Significant Fire and Rescue Service resources attended this incident and, as many will be aware, fire crews are currently under considerable pressure dealing with incidents across the region, including moorland fires.

Any young people identified as having accessed the school roof will be dealt with robustly and appropriate action will be taken.
