SPICE AND HOT WEATHER: HARM REDUCTION ADVICE

DRUG INFORMATION 

With the warm weather continuing, it's worth taking a bit of extra care if you or someone you know is using Spice. 

Hot conditions can make it harder to stay hydrated and comfortable, particularly if someone is already feeling unwell, confused or distressed. 

If you choose to use or know someone that is using:

• Try not to use alone  

• If you're with others, avoid everyone using at the same time so somebody can recognise signs of distress and call for help if needed 

• Drink water regularly throughout the day 

• Stay in the shade where possible 

• Take breaks from the heat 

• Check in on friends and people who may be vulnerable 

• Avoid mixing Spice with alcohol or other drugs, SSRI antidepressants may increase risks from Spice use, but other prescribed medication could as well. 

Signs that someone may be struggling: 

Spice can affect people in different ways. Look out for: 

• Confusion or disorientation 

• Paranoia 

• Hallucinations 

• Extreme anxiety or panic 

• Difficulty responding 

• Sudden collapse 

• Seizures 

• Breathing difficulties 

• Severe distress or psychosis 

If someone is experiencing psychosis: 

• Stay calm and speak clearly 

• Give them space 

• Reduce noise and distractions 

• Reassure them that they are safe 

• Stay with them if it is safe to do so 

Avoid arguing with them or challenging what they are seeing or hearing. 

Call 999 immediately if someone: 

• Becomes unresponsive 

• Has a seizure 

• Is struggling to breathe 

• Collapses 

• Has chest pain 

• Is at risk of harming themselves or others 

If they are unconscious but breathing, place them in the recovery position and stay with them until help arrives. 

Naloxone 

Naloxone does not reverse the effects of Spice. However, if someone is unconscious or you suspect opioids may also be involved, administer naloxone, call 999 and stay with the person until help arrives. 

Look out for each other. A welfare check, a bottle of water, and getting help early can make a real difference. 💛
