NYP: Help Prevent Fires and Keep Our Communities Safe

North Yorkshire Police is reminding residents of the dangers of starting fires during the current spell of dry weather and asking everyone to help prevent anti-social behaviour that could put lives, property and local wildlife at risk.

Over recent weeks, areas of dry grass, woodland and open countryside have become increasingly vulnerable to fire. What may begin as a small fire, discarded barbecue, campfire or deliberate act of fire-setting can quickly spread out of control, causing significant damage and placing people in danger.

Deliberately starting fires is not only extremely dangerous, but can also constitute anti-social behaviour and criminal offences. Fires can destroy wildlife habitats, damage farmland and public spaces, threaten homes and businesses, and create fear and concern within local communities.

Emergency services can be diverted from other critical incidents to deal with preventable fires, placing additional pressure on resources and potentially delaying responses to people in genuine need.

We are asking parents and carers to speak with young people about the risks and consequences of setting fires or gathering in areas where fire-starting materials may be used irresponsibly. We also encourage everyone to report any suspicious behaviour involving fire-setting, particularly in parks, open spaces, woodland and rural areas.
