Stay Safe While Shopping – Pickpocketing and Distraction Theft Prevention Advice |
||
|
Dear Residents, We are reminding everyone to remain vigilant while shopping in supermarkets and other busy retail locations. Unfortunately, offenders sometimes target shoppers using pickpocketing and distraction techniques to steal wallets, purses, mobile phones, bank cards, and other valuables. These crimes can happen very quickly and often without the victim realising until later. How distraction thefts commonly occur: Crime Prevention Advice ✔ Keep handbags zipped and closed at all times. ✔ Carry bags in front of you where possible, rather than over your shoulder or behind you. ✔ Keep wallets, phones and keys out of sight and avoid placing them in back pockets. ✔ Never leave handbags, purses or mobile phones unattended in shopping trolleys. ✔ Be aware of anyone standing unusually close to you or attempting to distract you. ✔ Keep your PIN confidential and shield keypads when making payments. ✔ Consider carrying only the cash and bank cards you need. ✔ If using a phone while shopping, return it securely to a pocket or bag after use. If You Become a Victim By taking a few simple precautions and remaining aware of your surroundings, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft. Please share this advice with family members, friends, and neighbours, particularly those who may be more vulnerable to distraction thefts. Thank you for your continued support in helping to keep our community safe.
