Stay Safe While Shopping – Pickpocketing and Distraction Theft Prevention Advice

We are reminding everyone to remain vigilant while shopping in supermarkets and other busy retail locations.

Unfortunately, offenders sometimes target shoppers using pickpocketing and distraction techniques to steal wallets, purses, mobile phones, bank cards, and other valuables. These crimes can happen very quickly and often without the victim realising until later.

✔ Keep handbags zipped and closed at all times.

✔ Carry bags in front of you where possible, rather than over your shoulder or behind you.

✔ Keep wallets, phones and keys out of sight and avoid placing them in back pockets.

✔ Never leave handbags, purses or mobile phones unattended in shopping trolleys.

✔ Be aware of anyone standing unusually close to you or attempting to distract you.

✔ Keep your PIN confidential and shield keypads when making payments.

✔ Consider carrying only the cash and bank cards you need.

✔ If using a phone while shopping, return it securely to a pocket or bag after use.
