Use of CCTV Sensibly

If you have CCTV, make sure cameras are positioned to mainly monitor your own property, including entrances, driveways, vehicles and gardens. Where possible, avoid recording neighbouring homes, private gardens or windows. Many modern systems include privacy masking features which can be used to block out areas that do not need to be monitored.

Residents should be aware that if a domestic CCTV system records areas beyond the boundary of their property, such as public footpaths, roads or neighbouring properties, data protection laws may apply. CCTV owners must use footage responsibly, keep recordings secure and have a legitimate reason for recording.

CCTV should never be used to deliberately monitor, intimidate or target neighbours. Repeated behaviour designed to cause alarm, distress or fear can potentially amount to harassment and may lead to police involvement or legal action.

If you have concerns about a neighbour's CCTV, try to speak with them politely in the first instance. Many issues can be resolved through discussion and simple adjustments to camera positions. The Information Commissioner’s Office also advises residents to raise concerns directly with the CCTV owner before escalating matters.
