Urban exploring

Dear Resident

As we are now well into the summer holidays we thought it was important to highlight the issue of Urban exploring in our town.

We understand the appeal of exploring abandoned buildings and hidden locations, but so-called "urban exploring" can be extremely dangerous.
 

Many disused buildings are structurally unsafe, with risks including collapsing floors, falling debris, exposed asbestos, open shafts, broken glass and unsafe electrics. These sites are often unsecured and emergency services may struggle to reach you if something goes wrong.
It's also important to remember that most abandoned buildings remain private property. Entering without permission is trespassing and, in some circumstances, other offences such as criminal damage or burglary may be investigated if there is evidence of intent or damage

We are aware that videos and photographs shared on social media can make these locations appear exciting, but they rarely show the real dangers involved.

If you come across a property that appears insecure or notice anyone placing themselves or others at risk, please report it to the police. In an emergency, or if someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.
