Man charged for persistent misuse of 999 emergency number

A 49-year-old man from Lowestoft has been charged after a number of nuisance calls were made to the 999 emergency number.

In the early hours of Tuesday 21 July, call takers at Suffolk Constabulary’s Contact and Control Room (CCR) received multiple calls from a verbally abusive man, who did not require emergency response.

After being warned against his temperament and language, his number was blocked to prevent further nuisance calls.

Nicky Houghton, of Normanston Drive in Lowestoft, was arrested a short time later, at 3:10am, and taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre where he was subsequently charged with persistently making use of public communication networks to cause annoyance.

He has been released on bail and is due to appear at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 12 August
