Police appeal after cash stolen in suspected distraction theft - Ipswich

Police are urging members of the public to be vigilant when withdrawing money from a bank.

The advice follows an incident that occurred at approximately 12:30pm yesterday, Tuesday 28 July, in Cornhill, for which police are appealing for information.

It was reported that a man aged in his 60s had withdrawn a quantity of cash from an ATM on Tavern Street, placed it in his rucksack, before leaving on a bicycle. Whilst cycling, he felt his back was suddenly wet and stopped.

Two men then approached the victim and offered to wipe the liquid, believed to be a culinary sauce, from his shirt with tissues. A third man, who had been unseen by the victim, is said to have gone into the victim’s bag and removed the cash.

Both suspects who assisted the victim are described as approximately 5ft 6ins in height and were wearing a dark top, dark trousers and a baseball cap.

It is believed the third suspect was dressed in black clothing and wearing a white baseball cap.

Police are reviewing CCTV opportunities and are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident, or may have information relating to the identity of the suspects to get in touch.
