Sutton Neighbourhood Police Team Update

Sutton remains a safe place to live, work and visit, and this is thanks in no small part to the strong partnership between residents, businesses and your local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

In this month's Sutton Neighbourhood Policing Team update, we'd like to share some recent successes and highlight the work being carried out across the borough to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Unless otherwise stated, all crime reduction figures quoted in this update are compared with the previous four-week period.

Retail Crime: Retail crime remains a key priority for us in Sutton. We understand the impact shoplifting has on retail workers, businesses and the wider community, and we are committed to ensuring everyone feels safe when shopping. During July, we arrested several individuals responsible for shoplifting offences across The Wrythe, Sutton Central, South Beddington, Roundshaw, Wallington North and Wallington South. We also made arrests for handling stolen goods.

Retail Crime in Wallington: We know from speaking with residents that there is frustration about shoplifting and retail crime affecting Wallington High Street. Officers from Wallington South Ward have been working closely with local retailers to ensure we receive the evidence and information needed to identify and prosecute offenders. During July, officers conducted retail crime operations, resulting in three arrests and the recovery of more than £800 worth of stolen stock.

Anti-Social Behaviour: We have used the information provided by residents regarding ASB to direct our patrol activity and enforcement efforts. As a result, anti-social behaviour incidents reduced by 7.5% during July, and a number of Community Protection Warnings (CPWs) were issued to address persistent issues. Throughout the summer, we will continue targeted patrols in parks, open spaces, transport hubs and town centres to prevent anti-social behaviour, which includes the anti-social riding of eBikes, and provide reassurance to local communities.

Robbery and Community Safety: We know that feeling safe while out and about in Sutton is important to residents, workers and visitors alike. Using crime data and intelligence, officers have carried out targeted robbery patrols throughout July, deploying both uniformed and plain-clothes officers in locations identified as being at greater risk. These proactive patrols contributed to a 38% reduction in robbery offences over the past four weeks.

Motor Vehicle Crime: Motor vehicle crime remains a concern frequently raised at Ward Panel meetings and during community engagement events. Working alongside specialist policing teams across Sutton and the wider Metropolitan Police Service, we have conducted targeted operations and patrols based on intelligence and crime analysis. As a result, Sutton has seen a 28% reduction in theft of motor vehicles and a 6% reduction in theft from motor vehicles in the past 4 weeks.
