Community Safety Alert: Beware of "Hugger Mugger" Theft

We are reminding residents, commuters and visitors to be vigilant against a type of theft commonly known as a "Hugger Mugger".

This crime occurs when offenders use distraction techniques, such as pretending to be overly friendly, offering a hug, asking for assistance, or engaging in conversation, to steal valuables such as mobile phones, wallets, bank cards, cash, jewellery or watches. These offences often take place in busy streets, transport hubs, nightlife areas and crowded public spaces.

How to Protect Yourself

✅ Be cautious of strangers who approach you unexpectedly and invade your personal space.

✅ Keep wallets, phones and valuables in secure, zipped pockets or bags.

✅ Avoid displaying expensive jewellery, watches or large amounts of cash.

✅ Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

✅ Politely decline unwanted physical contact from people you do not know.

✅ If someone distracts you, check that your belongings are still secure.

Look Out for Vulnerable People

Criminals may target elderly or vulnerable members of our community who may be less aware of these tactics. Please share this advice with friends, relatives and neighbours to help keep them safe.

If You Become a Victim

📞 Call 999 if the offender is still nearby or a crime is in progress.

📞 Report non-emergency incidents via 101 or online at www.met.police.uk.

💳 Contact your bank immediately if your bank cards have been stolen.

📝 If safe to do so, try to remember descriptions of the suspect, including clothing, distinguishing features and the direction they travelled.
