Coastal Alert – Shellfish Harvesting at the Reculver Coastline

Dear Residents,

Kent Police has received reports of people harvesting shellfish along the Reculver coastline. These incidents are causing concern for residents and raise important environmental and legal issues. 

Many species of shellfish found on our coastline are protected by law, with specific regulations governing when, where and how they can be collected.

Removing shellfish without adhering to these regulations can result in enforcement action and can have a detrimental impact on the local marine environment.

Shellfish Collection Regulations

Cockles:

Must not be removed from the shoreline in any quantity.

Periwinkles (Sea Snails):

There is no restriction on the amount that may be collected from the shoreline.

However, they must not be removed from the beach using any mechanical means.

Native Oysters:

Protected species.

Minimum harvest size: 7cm shell width.

Rounded shell shape with smooth, brittle shells, including a shallow cupped bottom shell and flat-top shell.

Pacific Oysters:

Non-native species.

Elongated shell shape with rough, fluted shells and a deep cupped bottom shell.

May be retained for personal consumption, but excessive quantities must be returned above the high tide line to die.

Mussels:

May only be removed when larger than 18mm in diameter.

Green Shore Crabs:

The most common crab found along the Kent coastline.

No restrictions on removal.

Clams:

Must have a minimum diameter of 35mm before they can be harvested.
