Fire Safety and Prevention

We have recently received reports of young people setting fires in fields and to hay bales in the local area.

While this may seem harmless to some, fires in open countryside can spread extremely quickly, especially during periods of warm, dry weather. A small fire can rapidly develop into a large wildfire, putting people, homes, wildlife, farmland and emergency services at risk.

We would ask parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers and consequences of setting fires. Deliberately starting fires can result in criminal offences being committed, as well as causing significant damage to crops, property and the local environment.

Wildfire Safety Advice

✅ Never light fires, campfires or disposable barbecues in fields, woodland or open spaces unless in permitted areas.

✅ Do not leave glass bottles or litter behind, as sunlight passing through glass can increase fire risks.

✅ Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials responsibly and ensure they are fully extinguished.

✅ If you see a fire, move to a safe location and call 999 immediately, asking for the Fire and Rescue Service.

✅ Report any suspicious behaviour relating to fire setting to the police.

Farmers work hard to produce crops and maintain their land, and a single fire can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage in a matter of minutes.
