BEYOND THE SURFACE | 09 The Cycle of Repetition

One of the things you notice when you spend time on a neighbourhood is how often the same problems come back.. The same location. Sometimes the same people.. The same complaints. The same conversations.

Something happens.Someone is spoken to.

Things settle down. Then, a few days or weeks later, we're dealing with something similar again.

It can be frustrating — especially for the residents and businesses who have been living with it for much longer than we have.

But repetition tells us something. Whatever has been tried so far hasn't fully changed the situation.

That doesn't necessarily mean the response was wrong.

Sometimes the person needs support.

Sometimes there are other people influencing what is happening.

Sometimes enforcement is necessary.

And sometimes several things need to happen together.

The important thing is not to keep treating every new incident as though it has appeared from nowhere.

The history matters. The pattern matters.

That's where experience, information and good local knowledge become important.
