Monthly community update from Ceredigion Roads Policing Sgt Dave Hawksworth - August 2026

Hello everyone

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share a quick round up of the work that your local Roads Policing Unit have been doing in your area, what's coming up and how we are working with partners to keep our roads safe for those living in, working in and visiting Ceredigion BCU.

From what our communities have told us we have been focusing on:

Road Safety & Speeding Concerns (A487 Aberystwyth to Aberaeron)

Road Safety, Speeding Concerns & Anti-Social Driving (A482 Aberaeron to Lampeter - Including Aberaeron & Lampeter Towns)

Road Safety, Speeding Concerns & Anti-Social Driving (St Dogmaels to Crymych)

Anti-Social Riding and Illegal Off-Road Vehicle Use (Nant Yr Arian / Strata Florida)

To effectively tackle these issues we have been working with:

Ceredigion Neighbourhood Policing & Prevention Team (NPPT)

Ceredigion Response Policing Team

Dyfed Powys Police Rural Crime Team

Ceredigion County Council Road Safety Team

Go Safe / Road Safety Partnership

These collaborations are helping us respond more effectively and holistically to community needs.

As a result we have:

Around 114 hours of proactive patrols in priorty areas of concerns

Dealt with 90+ Road Traffic Offences (Focusing on Fatal 5 and Vehicles in Dangerous Conditions)

Made 17 Arrests for Drink & Drug Driving related Offences

Made Several Arrests for Drug Possession and Drug Supply Offences

Seized a Significant Quantity of Class B Controlled Drugs

In addition to the above:

The team have also been busy supporting the National Eisteddfod in Llantwd just outside Cardigan helping to ensure tens of thousands of visitors were able to reach the site safely and find their way safely home after their visit along with working to minimise disruption to the surrounding communities.

Stop checked a significant number of caravans ensuring they were safe to be on the roads and providing advice and guidance to caravan owners.

Deployed to a number of incidents in the county requiring the teams specialist drone capability including road traffic collisions, crimes in progress and high risk and vulnerable missing persons.

This coming month we will continue to target the issues affecting our communities by supporting the following:

National Campaigns:

Operation Spotlight (Fatal 5 Road Traffic Offences)

Operation Apex (Improving Road Safety for Vulnerable Road Users)

Operation Topaz (Targeting the Use of Illegal “Ghost Plates”)

Young Drivers Road Safety Focus

Upcoming events

The Big Tribute Festival returns to Lovesgrove (just outside Aberystwyth) over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and our team will be out on proactive patrols to make sure everyone is safe and fit to drive over the festival weekend.

Towards the end of August we will also be working with colleagues from North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit to run a joint operation focusing on Road Safety and Dangerous Vehicles up in the North of the County as we approach the busy August Bank Holiday Weekend.

Looking forward to September and Rali Ceredigion will return to the county from the 4th - 6th September bringing the European Rally Championships and European Historic Rally Championships as well as the British Rally Championships to the county again. Our team will be involved again this year ensuring a rapid policing response remains available 24/7 to all communities within the areas covered by the event and ensuring spectators and fans use our road network in a safe and appropriate manner.

Some of our team will also be at the RALI ENGAGE event at the Bandstand on Aberystwyth Prom on Friday 4th September, Saturday 5th September and Sunday 6th September where we will be joined by colleagues from Ceredigion County Council Road Safety Team and other emergency services and partners for a 3 day engagement event running alongside the rally focusing on Road Safety, Young Drivers, Engineering & Skills Apprenticed Pathways and vocational further education opportunities.

There will be plenty to see and do down there for children and adults alike with police interceptor vehicles to look around, Fire Service Vehicles, Historic Rally Cars and a wealth of road safety information. We will also be joined by the team from APEX RACE ROOMS who are providing us with a driving simulator for the event aimed at raising awareness in young drivers of the dangers of drink and drug driving, use of mobile phones and distractions in the vehicle. These 10 min sessions will be open to anyone aged 16 years or over so come down and see the team over the Rali Ceredigion weekend.
