I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety - Other (eg electric bikes and scooters), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. This evening, officers from neighbouring beats, the Neighbourhood Priority Team and the Safer Streets Team came together to carry out Operation Pedal Fast in Melton town centre.
We've received concerns from residents about electric scooters and electric bikes being ridden at excessive speeds through the town centre, creating safety concerns for pedestrians and causing anti-social behaviour.
What is Operation Pedal Fast?
Operation Pedal Fast is a dedicated policing operation aimed at tackling the illegal use of e-scooters and e-bikes, as well as addressing anti-social behaviour linked to cyclists. The operation includes enforcement action where necessary, including the use of Section 59 seizures for vehicles being used in a manner that causes alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public.
✅ Tonight's results:
3 electric scooters seized 1 electric bike seized A number of people engaged with and educated about the law and safe use of bikes and scooters
While these numbers may seem small, this is just the beginning. We will continue carrying out Operation Pedal Fast in Melton town centre to address the concerns raised by our community.
The bike shown in the photograph may appear to be a legal bicycle, and it is. However, due to the manner in which it was being used, it was seized under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act.
The evening wasn't over there. While concluding the operation, officers spotted a prolific shoplifter who attempted to make off on foot. Fortunately, our officers on bikes were quicker than he was! After a short pursuit, the offender was swiftly arrested and taken into custody.
👏 A fantastic result for the Melton Town Beat Team and a great example of teamwork across our local policing teams. Thank you to everyone who continues to report issues and help us make Melton a safer place for all.
