Community Engagement - Bicycle Patrols in Glossop, Whitfield and Simmondley this afternoon - Monday 24th August

Glossop SNT -   Youth Engagement/ Community Engagement 

This afternoon, Monday 24th August, PCSO Buller from Glossop Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) was out and about on the electric powered Police bicycle (In the UK, legal electric bikes are known as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles) to patrol and visit our local parks, on the eastern side of Glossop, including Whitfield and Simmondley.

First port of call was at Manor Park, Glossop which was very busy with lots of families and young people enjoying the sunny afternoon, it’s good to see the numbers of residents and visitors using these great free local facilities - such as the lower and new upper play areas but including the skate park, rose garden, gardens and the grassed areas too.

It also gave the team a chance to chat with our partners from High Peak Borough Council Parks Dept - today with members of their team who were busy working on some flower beds when I turned up - they did mention that minor damage and ASB had occurred over the holidays in various locations inside the park (already reported to Police via 101) and asked for extra patrols and attention to be paid in the evenings when the park isn’t as busy.

The teams next visit was to the Pyegrove Play area - off Sheffield Rd - this gave the team another chance to engage with some young people (older teenagers this time) enjoying a game of twist (cards) with some unusual Pyegrove rules.

From there across to the MUGA (Multi Use Games area) at Shirebrook Park - there were some mums and children who were happily using the equipment in the play area alongside a small group on the MUGA itself. 

Onto Whitfield Rec (Play Area) at Wood St, Whitfield - The most popular piece of equipment by far today was the zip wire, with approx. 8-10 young people having lots of fun and laughter on and around it- the team managed a quick chat with some of the youngsters in between the rides.

Then the short ride to Hare Hills Park (known as Sandhole Park, or another name Pinch Belly Park) where 2 young people were chilling on the bucket swing - again this was an ideal opportunity to engage with them and ask how the summer holidays have gone.

It was then a longer ride up to the Simmondley MUGA off Pennine Rd - again there were a group of young people using the equipment and just chilling/and relaxing - it was good to have a quick chat with them too. 

Police youth engagement teams have as their key role to build better relationships with children and young people, provide crime prevention advice when necessary and to find out what issues matter most to them.

By visiting the parks and play areas today goes some way to ensure that young people understand the law, feel able to reach out to us if they need help etc.
