Keep people with Dementia safe

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme that allows carers, family members and loved ones of vulnerable people to record important information that could help police if that person is ever reported missing.

From 7 September 2026, the Herbert Protocol will be available through a new online system, making it easier to complete, securely store and update information. This could include details about routines, favourite places, medical needs, communication difficulties and emergency contacts.

Having this information readily available can assist police in locating a missing person more quickly and safely, reducing the time needed to gather key information during the early stages of an investigation.
