Ward Sergeant's Update - Notting Hill Carnival

Here’s what your Safer Neighbourhood Team has been up to this week

• 1 individual arrested for possession of Class A drugs.

• 2 individuals arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

• 1 Machete recovered from post fight, where two individuals were arrested.

• 1 individual searched for drug offences.

• 5 investigations been brought to conclusion.

• 20 current investigations being investigated, which include, criminal damage, theft, public order and ASB offences.

• A Q&A session with medical staff at an NHS centre.

• Assisted Camden Council with conducting a warrant.

• Patrolled multiple streets around the wards.

• Re-deployed to complete reassurance patrols across Camden over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

• Ward Police Officers deployed to Notting Hill Carnival (see below).

   

Notting Hill Carnival – 60th Anniversary Event

Notting Hill Carnival began in 1966 and celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.  Its origins, however, date back to 1959, when Caribbean carnival events were first held indoors before evolving into the vibrant street festival we know today.

Rooted in London's Caribbean community and inspired by the experiences of the Windrush generation, Notting Hill Carnival celebrates Caribbean culture, music, art, food and heritage.  It has grown into one of the world's largest and most iconic cultural festivals.

If you attend Carnival, you will be immersed in a vibrant celebration of Caribbean heritage and a powerful symbol of diversity, resilience and community.  The streets come alive with colourful parades, spectacular costumes and a soundtrack of Caribbean music, including Soca, Reggae, Dancehall, Steelpan and Calypso.  Along the route, you'll find the famous sound systems pumping out everything from Garage and Jungle to Drum & Bass and much more.  There is dancing at every turn, cultural performances throughout the day and, of course, an incredible variety of Caribbean food.  From jerk chicken and curry goat to doubles and roti, there's something to tempt everyone and plenty to keep you coming back for more.

This year, Carnival is expected to attract around two million people over the Bank Holiday weekend, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world and widely regarded as the largest of its kind in Europe.

The Metropolitan Police plays its part, in helping keep everyone at Carnival safe.  Your local ward Police Officers will be joining more than 7,000 Police Officers from across the Metropolitan Police Service, who will all be deployed to Notting Hill Carnival throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.  Together, they will work to ensure that those attending can enjoy the event safely and securely while helping to maintain the welcoming and vibrant atmosphere that makes Carnival such a special occasion.
