***Teddington Lock***

Good Afternoon,  

I am writing to provide you with a further update on the blue-green algae bloom, which was first detected on 18th August 2026.  

The blue-green algae bloom continues to persist along the 10-kilometer stretch of the lower River Thames between Sunbury Lock and Teddington Lock, including at the Ham and Kingston Designated Bathing Water.  This is a category ONE incident that poses risks to human health, animals, and the wider environment.  

The river is continuing being monited  the river. There has been unconfirmed sightings of small and isolated patches of algae in the tidal Thames from Teddington lock to Richmond half tide lock (approx. 5km), which could potentially spread further with the tide. 

We advise the public to report environmental incidents on GOV.UK, 0800 80 70 60, such as fish in distress or algae blooms in other reaches.

We cannot predict how long the bloom will persist, but cooler weather and increased river flow will help improve conditions.
